Ezhutharinadhar Temple - Innambur –  is a sacred Shiva temple near Kumbakonam, known for its connection to Surya Bhagavan and blessings for education and knowledge.

Once upon a time, Surya Deva (the Sun God) lost his beauty and radiance. He approached the sages and asked for a way to regain it. The sages advised him to worship Lord Shiva at Innambur, the sacred place where the celestial elephant of the Devas, Airavatham, had worshipped Lord Shiva.

When Surya Deva came to this temple for darshan, Nandhi and Lord Vinayaka initially blocked his view of Lord Shiva. Moved by his sincere prayers, they stepped aside and allowed him to worship the Lord. Because of this, this is one of the rare temples where there is no Nandhi directly facing the Lord.

Surya Deva is also known as “Inan”, and hence this place came to be called Innambur.

Another great significance of this temple is that Lord Shiva taught grammar to Sage Agasthya here. Therefore, the Lord is called Ezhutharinadhar (the One who is the Lord of Letters and Grammar).

Another legend speaks about King ruling this region and his accountant Sudhanman, who was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. The king once asked Sudhanman to present the temple accounts. Though Sudhanman submitted them properly, the king raised doubts.

Distressed, Sudhanman prayed to Lord Shiva. The very next day, Lord Shiva took the form of the accountant and personally appeared before the king, clearing all his doubts. Later, when Sudhanman brought the accounts again, the king realized that Lord Shiva Himself had come to protect His devotee.

Understanding the divine grace, the king sought forgiveness from Sudhanman and built a temple for the Lord at this sacred place.
