King Indradyumnan was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. one day when he was meditating deeply on Lord Vishnu, Sage Durvasa came to visit him. Even after a long time, the king couldn’t recognize his presence. The sage lost his patience and cursed the king to born as an elephant. After hearing this, the king came out of his meditative state and pleaded for forgiveness. The sage relented and blessed him that he will continue to be a Vishnu devotee even as an elephant. He will be relieved from his curse when a crocodile comes and catches his legs, and the elephant Gajendhra will cry for a rescue calling Lord Vishnu. In the tank of the Temple presently seen, there lived a crocodile named Kuhoo. He got that form because of a curse from sage agasthya. The crocodile was once a demon. He asked for the remedy and the sage said, "When the elephant Gajendhra comes to this tank, you will catch hold of his leg. He will cry for rescue calling Lord Vishnu. Vishnu will appear in garuda vahanam and kill you using his chakryudham. You will be relieved from your curse". As per the sage's words Gajendhra and the crocodile got moksham. The lord here is called Gajendhra varadhar. Goddess is POTRAMARAIYALL alais RAMAMANI.
