Temple History

In the past, the legendary Sage Gautama resided in his hermitage in the company of the wife of his life, Agalika who led an exemplary life, characterized by discipline and fervor.

A few days ago, Lord Indra King of the Devas went to the hermitage. On seeing Agalika, he developed desire. In order to take advantage of his absence from Sage Gautama Indra dressed himself in the form of the Sage and entered the monastery.

Agalika believed that it was her husband, and did not realise the lie.

After Sage Gautama returned and discovered that he had been lying, he was extremely angry. He cursed Indra to ensure that the body of his would become coated by eyes in a sign of his guilt.

In the wake of the severity of his error, Indra sought forgiveness. Indra performed a fervent penance before the Lord Shiva in order to get free of the curse.

Lord Shiva requested him to build an Shiva Lingam of sand, and then perform the Abhishekam. Indra was unable to do this and fought for a lengthy time, but he continued his prayer.

Even with a long period of penance forgiveness was not forthcoming immediately. Indra continued to pray for the Mother Ambika however, she was not able to receive any response.

Then, completely surrendered and deep regret Indra took a deep embrace of his Shiva Lingam in a vow that he would not be a sexist jerk to women.

Remorseful of his sins, Lord Shiva forgave Indra and freed Indra of the curse.

This temple is an example that any mistake can be forgiven with forgiving when repentance is genuine.
