Kannayiranathar Temple - Thirukkaravasal is a sacred temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Kannayiranathar. The temple is closely connected with the divine story of Indra, King Musukundhan, and the sacred Vidanga Lingams.

According to temple legend, Lord Indra, the king of the Devas, once fought a war against powerful demons. During this battle, he received great help from the noble king Musukundhan, whose bravery and support helped Indra achieve victory.

As a token of gratitude, Indra offered the king a special gift and promised to give anything the king desired.

King Musukundhan requested the sacred Vidanga Lingam, which Indra himself worshipped. However, Indra was reluctant to part with the Lingam. To avoid giving it away, he asked the divine sculptor Maya to create six identical Lingams that looked exactly like the original Vidanga Lingam.

Indra planned to present these Lingams to the king so that he would not recognize the real one.

But soon Indra realized that this situation was actually a divine test from Lord Shiva. Realizing his mistake and understanding the greatness of King Musukundhan’s devotion, Indra decided to act truthfully.

He presented all seven Lingams to the king.

King Musukundhan then consecrated the Aadhi Vidanga Lingam at Thirukkaravasal and worshipped Lord Shiva with great devotion. The temple thus became a sacred place connected with the divine Vidanga Lingams.
