Kolavilli Raman Temple - Thiruvelliangudi is a sacred Divya Desam near Kumbakonam, associated with Sukra (Venus) and divine eye healing blessings.

One of the Navagrahas, Planet Venus (Sukra), worshipped Lord Vishnu at this holy place. Hence, the village came to be known as Velliangudi and also Sukrapuri.

When King Mahabali performed a grand Yagam, the Devas sought Lord Vishnu’s help. Lord Vishnu took the Vamana Avatar and approached Mahabali, asking for three feet of land. Though Guru Sukracharya warned the king that Vamana was no ordinary boy, Mahabali insisted on granting the boon.

To prevent the offering, Sukracharya took the form of a bee and blocked the water passage in the Kamandalam so that the ritual donation could not be completed. Lord Vamana cleared the blockage using a blade of grass, which struck Sukracharya’s eye, causing him to lose his vision.

Realizing his mistake, Sukracharya performed deep penance at Thiruvelliangudi, meditating upon Lord Vishnu. Pleased with his devotion, the Lord restored his eyesight. Sukracharya then requested the Lord to grant darshan in the form of Lord Rama. Accepting his prayer, Lord Vishnu set aside His conch and chakra, took bow and arrow in His hands, and appeared as Kolavilli Raman.

This sacred place has also been worshipped by Parasara, Markandeya, Brahma, Indra, and Bhooma Devi.
