Thirunandhipura Vinnagaram, also known as Nadhankoil, is a sacred Divya Desam near Kumbakonam dedicated to Lord Jagannadha Perumal and Goddess Shenbagavalli.

Mother Mahalakshmi once desired to reside permanently in Lord Vishnu’s heart. To fulfill her wish, she came to this sacred place known as Shenbagaranyam and performed intense penance. Unable to bear the separation from her, Lord Vishnu accepted her into His chest on a Friday during the full moon fortnight in the Tamil month of Aippasi.

There is another divine history connected to this kshetram. Devotees must receive permission from Nandhi before worshipping Lord Shiva. Ravana once attempted to enter Kailasam without Nandhi’s permission and was cursed that his kingdom would be destroyed by a monkey. Similarly, Daksha performed a Yagam without inviting Lord Shiva. Angered by this disrespect, Lord Nandhi entered the Yaga Shala with Bhoothas and disrupted the ritual.

However, Lord Nandhi himself once entered Vaikundam without seeking permission from the Dwarapalakas and was cursed to suffer from a heat-related disease. To relieve himself from this suffering, Nandhi came to this sacred place and worshipped Lord Vishnu. He was freed from his sorrow here, and thus this place came to be known as Thirunandhipura Vinnagaram.

The presiding deity here is Lord Jagannadha Perumal, and the divine mother is Goddess Shenbagavalli.
