Oppiliappan Temple - Thirunageshwaram is a sacred Divya Desam dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here as Oppiliappan along with Bhoomadevi Thayar.

According to legend, Thulasidevi prayed to Lord Vishnu expressing her desire to reside in His heart just like Lakshmi Devi. Lord Vishnu instructed her to go to Thiruvinnagaram and meditate in the form of a Tulasi plant. He further told her that Saint Markandeya would raise Lakshmi Devi as his daughter, and when He arrives there to marry Lakshmi, Thulasidevi would receive her blessing.

As destined, Lakshmi Devi was found on earth and brought up by Sage Markandeya, and she was called Bhoomadevi. One day, Lord Vishnu appeared before Markandeya in the form of an old man and asked for his daughter’s hand in marriage. The sage hesitated, saying that his daughter was too young and did not even know how much salt to add to food. The old man insisted. Finally, he revealed his true form as Lord Narayana. Filled with joy, Markandeya agreed to the divine marriage of Lakshmi Devi and Lord Vishnu.

The Lord declared that He would accept food even without salt. From that day onwards, salt has never been added to the Naivedhyam offered at this temple. This sacred temple is renowned for granting blessings related to marriage, unity, and harmony in family life.
