The presiding deity here is lovingly known as Padikkasunadhar — the Lord who blessed His devotee with a coin every single day.

There is also a powerful legend connected to Lord Muruga. Once, Lord Brahma was unable to explain the true meaning of the sacred Pranava Mantra (Om). Angered by his ignorance, Lord Muruga imprisoned Brahma.

Later, realizing the seriousness of his action, Lord Muruga consecrated a Shiva Lingam at this very place and worshipped Lord Shiva to seek forgiveness. That Lingam became the sacred deity worshipped here today.

This temple carries the vibration of humility, realization, and divine correction.

A devoted Shiva bhakta named Pugazhthurai Nayanar worshipped Lord Shiva daily with water from the river Arisilaru. Even in old age, he never missed his daily abhishekam.

Then came a severe drought.

His town suffered. Poverty surrounded him. Hunger weakened his body — but not his devotion.

One day, while performing abhishekam with trembling hands due to hunger, the pot slipped and fell on the Shiva Lingam. Shocked and heartbroken, he felt as though he had hurt the Lord Himself and fainted in grief.

That night, Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and said:

"Do not worry. Until this drought ends, I will give you one gold coin every day."

When he woke up, there was indeed a gold coin near the Lingam.

The next day — again a coin. And the next.

Every single day, Lord Shiva kept His promise.

With that daily coin, Pugazhthurai Nayanar continued his service without interruption. In time, he attained the holy feet of the Lord.

From that day, the deity became known as:

Padikkasu Alitha Nathar (The Lord Who Gave a Coin Daily)
