According to legend, Lord Ganesha once worshipped Lord Shiva with deep devotion. During the worship, the serpent around Lord Shiva’s neck became proud, thinking that Ganesha was worshipping him as well. Angered by this arrogance, Lord Shiva cursed the entire Naga clan to lose their powers. As a result, Adhisesha, Rahu, and Kethu also lost their divine strength.

Seeking relief from the curse, they surrendered at the feet of Lord Shiva. The Lord instructed them that they would regain their powers if they worshipped Him on Maha Shivarathri at specific sacred places — during the first jaamam at Kumbakonam, second jaamam at Thirunageshwaram, third jaamam at Thirupamburam, and fourth jaamam at Nagoor Naganadhar. Following His command, they performed the worship sincerely and were finally relieved from the curse.

Thirupamburam is especially significant as a Rahu-Kethu Temple. It is believed that devotees who worship Lord Pambureshwarar here receive the combined blessings equivalent to worshipping at Kumbakonam, Thirunageshwaram, Keezhperumpallam, and Kalahasthi.
