 Pasupatheeshwarar Temple - Aavur is a sacred Shiva temple near Kumbakonam, known for its powerful Pithru Dhosha pariharam and divine legends.

For the welfare of the people on this earth, Mother Parvathi often comes to this world to perform penance. Once, Mother Parvathi came to this place and began intense tapas. At that time, the area was filled with bushes and dense growth.

To protect Mother Parvathi, Devas and celestial beings from Devaloka came to this place and guarded her in the form of trees, plants, and creepers.

Lord Shiva appeared and gave darshan with long matted hair (Jatamudi). Because of this divine appearance, the Lord here is also known as Gavardheeshwarar.

Once there was a severe fight between Vayu Deva (God of Air) and Aadhiseshan. During the battle, Vayu Deva uprooted and threw two mountain peaks. One peak, Sundaragiri, fell at Thirunallur. The other peak, Manikoodagiri, fell at Aavur.

Kamadhenu and her calf Patti worshipped the Lord here and were relieved from a curse given by Sage Vasishta. This is another important legend associated with this temple.

A special feature of this temple is that Lord Muruga appears in a majestic 7-feet-tall form and gives darshan holding a bow and arrow, which is a rare posture.
