Sakshinatheswarar Temple  - Thiruppurambiyam is a sacred Shiva temple near Kumbakonam, known for divine justice and powerful relief from legal problems.

At the end of Krutha Yugam, there was a great Pralayam (deluge). Lord Shiva ordered Lord Ganesha to protect this temple. Using the Pranava Mantra “OM”, Lord Ganesha drew all the flood waters of the seven seas into a single well within the temple premises.

Varuna Deva, the God of Rain, consecrated Lord Vinayaka here by offering sea shells, conches, and the foam of sea water. Even today, a unique speciality of this temple is that abhishekam for Lord Ganesha is performed with honey. It is believed that all the honey used in abhishekam gets absorbed by Lord Ganesha.

Another important legend is associated with a merchant from Madurai named Aradhana Guptan. He died under the Vanni tree at this place due to a snake bite. The woman who was with him, Rathnavalli, cried out to Lord Shiva for help.

At that time, Thirugnanasambandhar visited this temple. He sang Thevaram hymns and revived the merchant back to life. He also arranged the marriage of the merchant and Rathnavalli in the presence of Lord Shiva, with the temple’s Madappalli (prasadam preparation place), the Vanni tree, and the sacred well as witnesses.

Later, the merchant’s first wife in Madurai could not accept this. Lord Shiva appeared before her along with the three witnesses and revealed the truth. These divine witnesses are still said to be seen in the Madurai temple. This incident is described in Thiruvilaiyadarpuranam and Silappadhikaram.

Because Lord Shiva stood as a witness (Sakshi) to uphold truth and justice, He is worshipped here as Sakshinathar (Sakshinatheswarar).

The Goddess here is Sriguhambigai, who blesses devotees along with child Muruga. Sambirani Thailam is the special and unique offering made to the Goddess.
