Saranatha Perumal Temple - Thirucherai is a sacred Vishnu temple where devotees pray for prosperity, divine protection, and abundance in life. The temple is deeply connected with the protection of the Vedas, the blessings of Mother Cauvery, and the grace of Lord Vishnu with His divine consorts.

Long ago, Lord Vishnu was resting on Adhisesha in the Ocean of Milk, while Goddess Lakshmi sat beside Him. Through His divine thought, the Lord summoned Lord Brahma and gave him an important task.

The Lord instructed Brahma to protect the sacred Vedas because Pralaya (the cosmic dissolution of the world) was approaching. Brahma was told to safeguard them in a pot made from the mud of a sacred place.

Brahma collected mud from many holy places and tried to make the pot, but every pot he made kept breaking.

Concerned, Brahma returned to Lord Vishnu and explained the situation. The Lord then instructed him to take sacred mud from Thirucherai.

When Brahma used the mud from this holy place, the pot was strong and unbreakable, allowing him to safely preserve the Vedas. Because of this divine event, Thirucherai became a highly sacred place associated with the protection of spiritual wisdom.

Another beautiful legend associated with this temple is the devotion of Mother Cauvery.

After performing intense penance, Mother Cauvery prayed for the divine grace of Lord Vishnu. Pleased with her devotion, the Lord appeared before her as a divine child and crawled onto her lap.

Later, Lord Vishnu blessed her again by appearing with His five divine consorts:

• Sridevi
• Bhoodevi
• Niladevi
• Mahalakshmi
• Saradevi

Because of this divine darshan, this temple is considered a place where prosperity, divine grace, and spiritual fulfillment flow abundantly.

It is also believed that Maharishi Markandeya attained Mukthi (liberation) at this sacred place.
