Sattanathar Temple  - Sirkazhi is one of the most historically and spiritually significant Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu.

At the end of a great pralaya (deluge), Sirkazhi alone remained without sinking under water. Lord Shiva and Mother Goddess arrived at this sacred place in a divine boat (Thoni), and hence the place came to be known as Thonipuram.

Brahma worshipped Lord Shiva here, and therefore the Lord is also called Brahmapureeswarar. Lord Sattanathar blesses devotees from the upper level of the temple. This is the unique temple where the Trimurthis (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) and the three Devis grant a darshan symbolizing Kailasa itself.

Sirkazhi is also the birthplace of the great saint Thirugnanasambandar. His parents were Shivapada Hridhayar and Bhagavathy. One day, when his father took him to the temple and went for a holy bath in the tank, the child began to cry. By Lord Shiva’s command, Mother Parvathi appeared and fed divine milk to the child before disappearing.

When his father returned and saw milk droplets on the child’s lips, he questioned him. The child pointed towards the divine couple and sang his first hymn “Thodudaiya Seviyan,” marking the beginning of his spiritual greatness.

Because of these divine events, Sirkazhi holds immense historical and spiritual importance.
