Thirukarukavur Sri Garbarakshambigai Temple is one of the most powerful temples near Kumbakonam, especially known for child blessing pariharam.

Long ago, this place was a beautiful garden filled with Mullai flower creepers. A sage named Nirudhvar lived here with his wife Vedhika. At that time, Vedhika was pregnant. One day, the sage went out, leaving her alone at home.

During that time, another sage named Urdhvapadha came seeking Biksha (alms). Vedhika was very tired due to her pregnancy and there was a delay in serving food. Angered by this delay, the sage cursed that the foetus in her womb would not survive.

In deep distress, Vedhika prayed sincerely to Devi. The compassionate Goddess appeared before her and protected the unborn child by keeping it safely inside a divine pot. Later, Devi handed over the fully grown baby to Vedhika. The child was named Naidhuruvan. From that divine act of protection, the Goddess here came to be known as Garbha Rakshambigai — the Mother who protects pregnancy.

This sacred temple is visited by thousands of couples praying for safe pregnancy and childbirth.
