Long ago, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi were amazed by the greatness of the holy city of Kasi, which was believed to remain protected even during Pralaya (cosmic destruction). Curious to see if any other place on earth possessed such sacred power, they travelled towards the southern lands.

During their journey, they came across the beautiful and spiritually vibrant place called Thiruvanchiyam. The divine couple were deeply pleased by the purity and serenity of the place.

They decided to remain there and bless devotees in the form of a Swayambu (self-manifested) Shiva Lingam, while Goddess Parvathi manifested as Gnana Sakthi, the divine power of wisdom.

Another important legend connected to this temple is that of Yamadharmaraja, the Lord of Death.

Yama felt deeply saddened because people blamed and criticized him for taking away the lives of living beings, even though he was only performing his cosmic duty.

Seeking relief from this burden, Yamadharmaraja came to Srivanchiyam and performed intense penance to Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion and sincerity, Lord Shiva granted him a powerful boon.

The Lord declared that Yama would not incur any sin while performing his divine duty, as he was simply maintaining the natural order of life.

Because of this blessing, this temple became a sacred place where devotees pray for protection from untimely death and fear of life’s uncertainties.
