Thenkudithittai Vasishteshwarar Temple is a powerful Shiva temple near Kumbakonam, known especially for Guru Bhagavan blessings and Guru Dhosha pariharam.

In a Yuga long ago, there was a great Pralayam. Even during that deluge, Sirgazhi and Thenkudithittai were not submerged under water, while the rest of the world was covered. Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi first appeared at Sirgazhi, where the sacred Mantra “OM” manifested. Later, they came to Thenkudithittai, where the Bija Mantra “HAM” and other sacred mantras appeared. Because of this divine manifestation of wisdom, this place is called Jnanamedu. Sirgazhi is otherwise known as Vadathittai.

These are the two sacred places where Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi came by their own divine will.

Sage Vashishta worshipped the Lord here, and hence the deity is called Vasishteshwarar. The Lord graces devotees surrounded by four Lingams and blesses as Panchalingeshwarar.

It is believed that Vasishteshwarar bestowed the position of Devaguru to Guru Bhagavan. There is a separate sannidhi for Guru Bhagavan in this temple, and he blesses devotees in a standing posture.
